Louise is a recovering alcoholic who runs AA to make a difference in other people's lives, while subconsciously trying to make right a tragic event that stemmed from her alcoholism.
Season 4[]
In the fall of 1968, after Bill gets into a car accident leaving a bar, he is forced to undergo mandatory AA meetings. This is where he meets Louise, who is in charge of the meetings at a local church. Louise agrees to drive him to the meetings as Bill's license has been suspended following the accident.
Louise later reveals that the reason she insists on making sure Bill sticks with the program is that she was involved in a car accident that paralyzed her husband from the waist down. After Bill is legally free of continuing the meetings, he continues anyway.
Louise shows up at the clinic in need of help in her personal life. She has been trying to engage in sex with her husband. However, because he is paralyzed from the waist down, he is unable to achieve an erection. Bill agrees to help her, but, after several techniques turn out to be of no help, Bill says that there is no way it will be able to happen.
Some time later, Bill shows up to the church and finds that Louise hasn't shown up. She instead is at a bar, having fallen off the wagon.
